The Economic Costs and Benefits of Nature-Based Climate Solutions

Nature-based solutions (NBS) are natural processes which remove carbon from the atmosphere and store it for a long time, providing a ‘natural’ way to mitigate climate change.

The RSPB commissioned Cambridge Econometrics to assess the ability of NBS to achieve nature and climate goals as well as to deliver a variety of public goods and private economic opportunities.

Focusing in particular on UK peatlands, salt marshes and woodland habitats Cambridge Econometrics conducted a comprehensive cost benefit analysis (CBA) and concluded that these nature-based climate solutions can indeed play an integral role in helping to deliver a net zero economy whilst also delivering noteworthy economic and social benefits.
