How Cambridge Econometrics uses AI
How Cambridge Econometrics uses AI
Last updated 9 November 2026.
We use AI tools to help our economists work faster and support quality control, but our analysis, judgement and independence remain our own, and a named project director is accountable for everything we deliver.
What we use it for. We use approved AI tools, currently Microsoft Copilot and Claude, to support tasks such as drafting and editing text, summarising documents, scanning literature, writing and checking code, and cleaning data. We use them through Cambridge Econometrics-managed accounts only.
Our judgement and our models. The results we give you come from our own models and methods, run and checked by our economists. AI may help with tasks around that work, but anything that feeds a figure or finding we give you is verified by a named person.
Accountability. Every deliverable is the responsibility of the project director who signs it off, whether or not AI was used to help produce it. Our staff check the figures, evidence and references in anything we send you.
Your contract comes first. At the start of each project, we check your contract for terms on AI, data protection and confidentiality, and we follow them. Where your terms restrict or prohibit AI, we do not use it on your data or deliverables.
Your data. We do not put your confidential material into tools or accounts that Cambridge Econometrics has not approved.
Transparency. We keep a record of how AI contributes to significant parts of our work. Where your contract requires it, or you ask us, we will tell you where and how we have used AI on your project.
Our people. Everyone at Cambridge Econometrics who uses these tools completes a briefing and signs a responsible-use agreement before they are given access, and we share good practice across the firm so that our standards improve together.
Questions. If you would like to discuss how we use AI on your project, please contact your project director or our COO, Ben Gardiner. We review this statement regularly.
