Devens Business Profile and Economic Contribution Analysis

MassDevelopment commissioned Cambridge Econometrics to profile businesses and estimate the broader statewide impacts of Devens, a 4,400-acre master-planned mixed-use community. 

Managed by MassDevelopment, Devens features a wide range of industrial, commercial, military, and residential uses, including housing development, business and industrial parks, hotels, restaurants, open space, and recreational facilities. Devens is home to 95 establishments, and has a growing residential presence and outdoor recreational amenities. Through an extensive survey and data collection process, the team was able to estimate the total direct jobs supported at Devens is up to approximately 7,700 workers, a 26 percent increase since 2020.

Using our Regional Economic Analysis and Change Tool (REACT), Cambridge Econometrics estimated the broader economic effects Devens has on the Massachusetts statewide economy, such as.

  • $4.3 billion in direct business output at Devens
  • $7.9 billion total economic contribution of Devens to the Massachusetts economy
  • $4.9 billion in value added (GDP) contribution
  • 16,700 employment contribution of Devens (including government)

The findings from this research highlight the significant role that Devens plays as an economic engine for the region and the state. This best practice in business and industrial park development (among other uses) demonstrates the benefits of intentional development with its strong employment base, high wages, and economic impacts which can help attract additional investment to the area ensuring that it remains a thriving, innovation hub in the future.
