Circular Economy in Africa-EU Cooperation: Country Report for Senegal

As part of an eight-country initiative led by the European Commission, Cambridge Econometrics contributed macroeconomic modelling to assess the impact of circular economy transitions in Africa. Our work focused on Senegal, supporting the broader "Circular Economy in Africa-EU Cooperation" project.

Using our advanced input-output Models, FRAMES, Cambridge Econometrics explored the potential benefits of implementing circular measures in Senegal, including:

  • Improved waste collection / recycling rates
  • Food waste prevention
  • Use of organic fertilisers
  • Use of recycled materials for plastic packaging and construction

By 2030, compared to a business-as-usual scenario, circular economy measures in Senegal could:

  • Increase GDP and jobs
  • Improve trade balance by reducing imports
  • Reduce efficiency losses in the agricultural value chain
  • Strengthen economic opportunities for informal waste workers

The findings from this report contributed to the overall findings from the full eight-country report and helped to identify areas where the EU and Africa can cooperate on policy decisions to advance the circular economy in Senegal.
