Recent developments
The current version of E3ME is version 5.0, which was completed in 2011 and includes data up to 2009. Version 5.0 of the model is a major upgrade to the previous version of the model (version 4.7) as it has been expanded to include four additional countries:
- Iceland
- Croatia
- FYROM
- Turkey
Version 5.0 also includes revisions to some equation specifications, which have improved model stability and adds dummy variables to account for the specific impacts of the financial and economic crisis. The adoption of a revised estimation system is ongoing.
The main data sources remain Eurostat, AMECO, the OECD's structural analysis (STAN) indicators and the IEA. EU KLEMS data are also used where appropriate and national sources have been consulted for the additional countries. Version 5.0 of the model covers 33 countries (the EU27 plus Norway and Switzerland and those listed above) but the other main classifications remain unchanged, with 42 industrial sectors, 41 consumption categories, 12 fuels and 19 fuel user groups. The model’s classifications remain broadly consistent with Cambridge Econometrics' global model (E3MG) and UK model (MDM-E3). Further revisions to take into account the new NACE revision are expected in 2012.
The new version of E3ME again includes two baselines that are calibrated to match the results from the PRIMES (2009) baseline and reference case model runs that are published by the European Commission (and incorporating more recent data).
Updates to the previous model version 4.7 are described in more detail here. The new submodels that were introduced to version 4.6 of the model are maintained in the new version and described here:

In addition, The Cambridge Centre for Climate Change Mitigation Research (4CMR), University of Cambridge, has recently used E3ME in two major research projects; for further details please see:
